On the road into College Station in Austin, Texas construction crews are completing a biotechnology research complex that represents the vision of Gov. Rick Perry for turning Texas A&M University into a biotech hub.
The National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing was envisioned by Brett Giroir, a research manager whose goal is to put a&M at the center of a national effort to develop faster ways of creating vaccines to fight disease pandemics and bio-terror threats. Already the university is seeing increased visits from pharmaceutical and medical device companies, as these industry players begin to recognize that what is going on in Austin has the potential to blossom into another Sunnyvale, CA. The payoff of this large investment will not only benefit the city, but has the potential to save millions of lives by improving the country's ability to respond quickly to pandemic disease.

The pharma companies actually contribute to the rise of corporate philanthropy. The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy poll involving 110 companies found they gave $13 billion in cash and products in 2010. There was an 18% increase in the corporate philanthropy with pharma companies leading the initiative and distributing medicines to poor people.
According to Alison Rose-manager, standards and measurement of the committee- whereas in the 2008-2009 period there was a 60 percent decrease in giving, the 2009-2010 period there has been a 65 percent increase in giving by pharma companies. But all pharma companies are not so generously parting with their money, some are still recuperating. While there has been an increase in philanthropy by some pharma companies, there has also been a decrease in giving. The statistics speak for themselves; one can see that there has been a 25 percent of pharma companies increased their donations by a quarter more while around 21 percent of the companies decreased them.

The biotech sector is reinforcing for change this year as many "Bio generic" drugs are being produced in the market. Sidney Wolfe, the director of health research group, was in the opinion thatBiotech drugs are one of the most expensive drugs.
US healthcare reform passed a law last year wherein biotech drugs were given a twelve year period of market, which would result into selling of generic versions. Chris Viebacher, CEO at French drugmaker sanofi said that some biotech drugs are more vulnerable to competition as compared to others. About eight years ago, the European Union passed a law creating a mechanism for the approval of generic biotech drugs. A recent approval of human use for the drug Lupus Drug was received by a biotech firm, Human Genome Sciences.
